SUMMER 3RD PARTY PROVIDER PROGRAM

Have you found a 3rd Party Provider program or another university's summer program that you'll be studying on for the summer (this does not include our Butler Faculty-Led summer programs, for which you can apply to specific programs on this online application system!)? We look forward to getting more details from you about that program! Once you have applied and have been accepted to your summer study abroad program, please click "Apply Now" on this page to create a profile in the CGE's online application system. We will be asking for program-specific information from you so we know who you are and where you will be going this summer.

If you haven't found your summer program yet, check out the following summer-specific information that can help (and is just good to know in general)!

Summer Study Abroad

You can take as many credits abroad over the summer as you wish - there are a large variety of program options, ranging from programs that offer a 3-credit course over a few weeks to programs that offer up to 9 credits over a few months. Discuss with your academic advisor to see what courses you should look for while abroad. If you are interested in getting your second GHS course waived over the summer, that is possible. Students who study abroad during the academic year or summer period and successfully complete a minimum of 9 credit hours while abroad are eligible to waive one semester of the GHS requirement.

Course Approval Process

You will get all of your summer study abroad courses approved before you leave Butler for your abroad experience. In the middle of the spring semester prior to your summer study abroad experience, the Center for Global Education (CGE) will come out with a pre-departure packet that contains forms for you to fill out before studying abroad. One is a course approval form, which will help you determine how your courses will transfer back for credit. If you are on our study abroad listserv (from time to time you receive emails from me about study abroad things), then you will receive a reminder to pick up the packet when it is ready and we will also announce its availability via The Connection and our social media.

Summer Study Abroad Through Butler

There are several summer study abroad opportunities run by Butler. If you are interested in going on one of these programs (or have already been accepted into one of these programs), please complete the program-specific application in this online application system.

Summer Study & Intern Abroad Through a 3rd Party Provider

Outside of our Butler University Faculty-Led summer programs, there are many other summer programs that are run by universities or organizations outside of Butler that will allow you to study and/or intern with them abroad. You are welcome to participate in any summer program you would like as long as the program provides you with an accredited transcript so that you will get credit for the work you complete. There are numerous programs out there. Below is a list of program providers where you could start looking for programs. All of these will provide you with a transcript:

IES: http://www.iesabroad.org/
IFSA-Butler: http://www.ifsa-butler.org/
SIT: http://studyabroad.sit.edu/
CEA: http://www.ceastudyabroad.com/

We also recommend going through our List of Approved Programs to see what other providers or universities we send students to. You can link directly to the programs’ websites and click around to find their summer offerings! If we send students to these providers or universities for a semester, you’ll know that the program is of a high quality and that the transcript we receive is accredited and acceptable for R&R.

Two other sites that can be helpful in your search are GoAbroad.com and GoOverseas.com. Both sites have search functions where you can put in program requirements and they'll pop up some program options that have reviews from past participants. When using these sites, you'll want to make extra sure that the programs you're looking at provide an accredited transcript!

Go to Google

Feel free to also just google your study abroad criteria and see what you find as there are many other reputable program providers. You’ll want to find a program that meets your personal and academic interests, availability/desired length of time, and budget. You will apply directly to the program provider (through their website), and they will bill you for the summer program fee.

Summer Study/Intern Abroad Finances

You will not receive any financial aid from the institution during the summer sessions, so whatever the program costs you will be paying out-of-pocket. With faculty-led programs, there are sometime small scholarships that you can apply for – you should ask the faculty member directly. With the summer programs that are run by universities or organizations outside of Butler, there are scholarships listed on their websites.

Next Steps

Talk to your academic advisor about what types of courses you should be looking for. Once you do that, you can start researching different programs. Whether you want to stick with a Butler-run program or go to another provider is up to you. Again, any program provider that offers you an accredited transcript upon completion of your time abroad should be fine.
